BARRY PARKHILL

From "The Shot" to The Top
August 27   -   7:30am

null

In March the University of Virginia Basketball team won it first NCAA Basketball Championship. Many long-time UVA fans think that their climb to the top began with a shot made nearly 50 years ago by our August speaker, Barry Parkhill.

In 1971, Barry sank a 12-foot baseline jumper with six seconds left. The shot lifted Virginia to a 50-49 upset over No. 2 South Carolina and earned the Cavaliers’ their first-ever national ranking (No. 15).

The largest crowd in UVA basketball history - just over 8,000 people - attended the non-televised game in Charlottesville. Five decades later, Barry was on the floor as a crowd of 72,000 and 24 million TV viewers watched the Cavaliers' win this year's Final Four.

On August 27, Barry will talk about making "the shot", Virginia's memorable March Madness success in 2019, and he will give us an insider's perspective on the importance of participation and success in college athletics to today's universities.

After a career as a player and coach, including a stint as head coach at WIlliam & Mary, Barry has spent the last 25+ years as a fund raiser for the University of Virginia. He currently serves as the Associate Athletic Director for Development. Barry will be introduced by Jim Hobgood, a Richmond Encorepreneur and a sophomore guard on the 1971 team with Barry.  (That is Jim's head in the foreground of the picture above.)
