SHAWN BRIXEY

Artist, Administrator, Educator, Researcher, and Inventor

Our next speaker, Shawn Brixey,  is a tenured professor in arts and engineering at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), and the former Dean School of the Arts at VCU (VCUarts). A renowned artist, accomplished administrator, educator, researcher, and inventor, Shawn is best known for pioneering (STEM to STEAM) research that explores the synthesis of art, design, engineering, physics, biology and computing. He creates works that utilize highly complex scientific technology and synthetic material, and his artist's tools include high powered stereo microscopes, lasers, custom electronics, ultrasound, robots, and other biotech and laboratory grade technologies.

Brixey will discuss recent and future hybrid arts projects and how a new generation of creative research offers extraordinary potential to advance pioneering scholarship, technological innovation, and new kinds of knowledge to help us create possibilities for richer connections, ways to solve problems, and create powerful experiences for our world.

A graduate of The Media Laboratory at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in architecture, environmental design, engineering, media arts and sciences, Brixey has exhibited research work extensively: Documenta; Deutscher Kunstlerbund; Cranbrook Art Museum; Yeshiva University Museum; MIT Museum; Contemporary Art Center of Cincinnati; Chicago Art Institute; Winter Olympics; American Design and Architecture Trie
nnial, Cooper Hewitt-Smithsonian National Design Museum; Berkeley Art Museum, The European Capital of Culture and many others.

Brixey has received a wide range of major digital arts and sciences grants and awards to support his research and educational programs, including National Endowment for the Arts, National Science Foundation, Apple Computer, AVID Incorporated, Adobe Systems Incorporated, Intel Corporation, Silicon Graphics, Newport Research Corporation, IBM, Derivative, Corporation for Public Broadcasting, Leica and Hughes Aircraft.
